Baby Naming
While Jewish boys traditionally receive their Hebrew names on the eighth day after birth at the time of their circumcision, Jewish girls can receive their Hebrew name at any time.
There are several ways to choose a Hebrew name for your daughter, but there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do it. The naming ceremony can take place either outdoors or indoors. I usually gather the parent(s) and child under a portable Chuppah (canopy) with family and friends surrounding them. I will craft a brief service reflecting your hopes, values and joys.
Additionally, I will provide lovely note cards for your guests to share their thoughts and wishes. These are to be sealed and put away until your daughter’s high school graduation.
If you are honoring the memory of a deceased relative, which is one custom, note that many of those relatives had Yiddish and not Hebrew names. I will be happy to help you find a Hebrew equivalent or can guide you in finding a Hebrew name; often the feminine form of a flower, animal, tree or season.
