Bar & Bat Mitzvahs

The translation of Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah literally means “Son or Daughter of the Commandment” and is the time when children become old enough to be responsible for their own religious conduct and faith. Traditionally, this is 12 for a girl and 13 for a boy. The ceremony usually takes place as part of a Shabbat service when the young person is called to the Torah to chant a Torah portion. A Bar/Bat Mitzvah can be simple or elaborate. Some are followed by a light luncheon called a “Kiddish.” Additionally, some families may have a party. During the Covid-Pandemic, many families put off having the service or held them virtually, without the usual celebrations.
I am also happy to create a non-gender specific “B’Mitzvah” for those children who identify with another gender. Hebrew is a very gender specific language, but I will do my best to find your child’s level of comfort.
Whether your son or daughter works with a local tutor or with me to prepare for their special day, I will craft a service that suits their level of learning and specific abilities and work with them to ensure they are confident. The amount of Hebrew or English in the service will be determined for each child.
I will also work on their public speaking skills so they will be able to deliver prayers, translations, sermon and “thank you” speeches in a poised and articulate manner.
